Description This piece was minted in 194 AD, during the reign of Septimius Severus, who ruled from 193-211 AD. Septimius Severus was one of three provincial governors who answered the call of an outraged public to oust the shamefully elected Didius Julianus, who literally had bought the throne in an auction. He was first to arrive in Rome, and easily dispensed with the deserted Julianus, who was beheaded in his palace. He then dealt with the forces of the other two governors, and became master of the Roman world. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate head of Septimius Severus facing right, with legends L.SEPT.SEV.PERT.AVG.IMP.III. The reverse type features Liber (Bacchus) standing half-left, cloak or skin over left shoulder, holding oenochoe and thyrsus, panther at left, standing left, head turned back to catch drips from jug. The legends read LIBERO.PARTI. Bacchus was depicted very infrequently on imperial series coins, and in fact it is this reverse type that Sear uses to illustrate the portrayal of Bacchus as an imperial type. Coin is struck on a somewhat irregular flan, which imnpacts some of the legends, but otherwise grades VF, with bold devices, clear legends where struck up, and a nice early portrait of Septimius Severus. There is even some original mint lustre still evident under light toning. This piece was formerly part of the collection of the late Roger A. Bickford-Smith, who was one of the premier specialists in coins of the Severan period. A very attractive example of this scarce and popular type, catalouged as RSC-301. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more.
