Description This piece was minted in 193 AD, during the first turbulent year of the reign of Septimius Severus, who ruled from 193-211 AD. Septimius Severus was one of three provincial governors who answered the call of an outraged public to oust the shamefully elected Didius Julianus, who literally had bought the throne in an auction. He was first to arrive in Rome, and easily dispensed with the deserted Julianus, who was beheaded in his palace. He then dealt with the forces of the other two governors, and became master of the Roman world. This type depicts the laureate head of Septimius Severus facing right, with legends IMP.CAE.L.SEP.SEV.PERT.AVG. The reverse type features Victory walking left, holding wreath and palm, with legends VICT.AVG.TR.P.COS. Coin shows light surface granularity, and is a little off center, but otherwise grades F+, with clear devices and most legends visible. A nice yet affordable example of the type, a variety of RSC-682. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more. For more ancients, please visit our WWW page at http://www.philly.infi.net/~mdgeary/ .
