Septimius Severus, AR Denarius, IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG, laureate head of Septimius Severus, facing right. / LEG XIIII GEM M V, with TR P COS in the exergue, and a legionary eagle on a low perch between two standards, ornamented with capricorns. VF, scarce! RSC III 272, RIC IV 14, Sear/RCV 6302, Vagi/CHRE 1751, (2.7 gm.). Issued 193 A.D., for the Fourteenth Legion, which has an interesting history. Its name Gemina (meaning 'twin') identifies it as a legion formed from two existing formations. That may date it to Julius Caesar, under whom a Legion XIV was first wiped out 54 - 53 B.C., then re-established, only to be later decimated 53 - 52 B.C. by invading Germans. Legio XIV was likely established or re-constituted by Octavian, for whom the capricorn (his zodiac sign) symbolized good luck, and served with him until the Battle of Actium, 31 B.C. Afterwards, it served in the Balkans from 30 B.C. - 9 A.D., then on the Rhine frontier, until 43 A.D. From 43 to 66 it served in Britain, when it gained the title, Martia Victrix, after the victory over rebels in Britain led by Queen Boadicea, in 60-61. From that victory onwards, Legio XIV proudly carried the name Martia Victrix, serving on the Rhine frontier after 70 A.D., and moved by Domitian to the Danube in 93 A.D. This was the first legion to declare for Septimius as Emperor. Lucius Septimius Severus was born in 145, and became a Senator at 28. He later served as Consul, and as a provincial Governor. He treated (and paid) his soldiers well, and used them effectively. In return, after the time of instability following the murder of the insane Emperor, Commodus, Septimius' legionaries acclaimed him Emperor. On reaching Rome, he took power, at the age of 48, after the hapless interim Emperor, Didius Julianus (who had actually bought the throne) was beheaded. He disposed of his other rival would-be emperors later, and went on to rule with much success, building many important structures, including re-building Hadrian's Wall.
