HD9916 Septimius Victory over Niger medallion

   Rare Septimius medallion, Victory over Niger

     Septimius Severus, Lead medallion, (42.12g) Rome Mint, c. 195 AD,
     L SEPTIMIVS SEVERVS PERTINAX AVG IMP VII Laureate, draped and
     cuirassed bust right / VICT AVG P M TR P III COS II P P Victory
     advancing right. cf. Gnecchi plate 93, 4 (same dies) Near VF,
     damaged.

     Commemorates victory over Pescennius Niger. While lead medallions
     are sometimes called, trial strikes they were more likely awards
     to not-so-senior officials, in comparison to gold, silver, and
     bronze. Few have survived. This piece die matches to bronze
     medallions plated in Gnecchi.
