Description: We are pleased to offer this genuine 1700+ year old Roman Antoninianus of the empress Cornelia Salonina, wife to emperor Gallienus, for your consideration. She was mother of Valerian II and Saloninus and was murdered along with her husband in 268 AD. This desirable coin was minted in Antioch 253-268 AD and survives in nearly very fine condition with both sides being well centered and exhibiting a gorgeous patina. It features a portrait of Salonina and a mythological scene of Salus, the Roman goddess of Health. Salus was identified with the Greek goddess Hygeia and was established at an early date in the history of the Roman people. She personified not only health, but preservation in general as well. Her principal temple in Rome was first dedicated in 311 BC and was restored on numerous ocassions due to damage from lightning strikes and fire. Her most popular aspect was known as "Salus Publica Populi Romani" ( Public Health of the Roman People ). The artistry and mythological subjects of ancient Roman Republican coins have always been a tremendous lure to collectors. In addition, these heirlooms of the ancient world have become extremely popular as showpieces for modern jewelry. Here's your opportunity to add this exceptional 1700+ year old example to your collection. You will not be disappointed with this artistic and valuable treasure.
