Description This piece was minted during the very brief reign of Pupienus, who ruled for all of ninety-eight days in 238 AD. Following the deaths of the Gordianii the Senate, realizing that they had incurred the active enmity of Maximinus, elected two of their number, Balbinus and Pupienus, as joint rulers. Balbinus was given the task of directing the civil administration, while Pupienus, who had considerable military experience, gathered troops to oppose the advance of Maximinus on Rome. Although Maximinus was checked, and ultimately slain by his own men, neither the citizens nor the army had any love for their two new rulers, and after a period of civil strife and disorder, the Praetorians invaded the palace, dragged out the two emperors and murdered them on July 29, 238 AD. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Pupienus facing right, with legends IMP.CAES.M.CLOD.PVPIENVS.AVG. The reverse features Victory standing front, head left, holding wreath and palm, with legends VICTORIA.AVG.SC. Coin is struck on a slightly oblongish flan, but otherwise grades a nice VF, with clear to bold devices and legends all around, and a bold attractive portrait of Pupienus. A very pleasing example of the bronze coinage of this very difficult emperor! This piece would make a terrific companion to the Balbinus Victory sestertius also available on E-Bay. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more. For more ancients, please visit our WWW site at http://www.philly.infi.net/~mdgeary/ .
