Description Barry & Darling Ancient Coins http://www.bitsofhistory.com [Image] Superb Pupienus AR Antoninianus Attribution: RSC 2, Sear 2410, Vagi 2032 Obverse : 'IMP. CAES. PUPIEN. MAXIMVS AVG.' His radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse : 'AMOR MVTVVS AVGG.' with 2 hands clasped. Grade : EF/gVF Notes : Pity poor Pupienus. A perfect example of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. With the death of the Gordiani in Africa, the Senate had to scramble to find a replacement ruler to defend Rome against the oncoming army of Maximinus and his son Maximus. The plan they came up with on the surface was sound, 2 of their fellow senators were appointed, one to run the administrative matters of the Empire and the other to raise an army for defense. The senators that were chosen were Balbinus for the administration, Pupienus to control the army and Gordian III, the 13 year-old grandson of Gordian I, as Caesar. Soon after their appointment the crisis resolved itself when Maximinus and son were murdered by their own army. All was not well though for the co-rulers soon started bickering among themselves. And after a reign of only 98 days, Pupienus and Balbinus were seized by a dissatisfied Praetorian Guard, dragged through the streets and murdered. This left the young Gordian III as the sole ruler of the empire. As you can see, this is a superb example with a well detailed portrait and full inscriptions on a broad flan. The coin features attractive toning and very good eye appeal. The reverse is a little softer than the obverse which is the reason for the slightly lower grade. A truly nice example of a very scarce coin from a short-lived emperor. GOOD LUCK! Click here to view our other auction listings. Have a Question?
