Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust left / Procopius standing facing, head right, holding labarum and shield; Chi-rho/SMHB. RIC IX 7.1. Good VF, dark green patina with some light earth. Rare. 716320. Procopius, a distant kinsman of the Emperor Julian II by marriage, led one of Julian's armies during the disastrous Persian expedition of 363. He later claimed to have been named as successor by Julian on his deathbed, but when Valens was made Emperor of the East by his brother Valentinian I, Procopius went into hiding. He emerged some months later in Constantinople (September 28, 365), where he was acclaimed as Emperor by the local garrison, who had become alienated by Valens' stinginess. After a few successes, Procopius met defeat and death in battle against loyalist forces on May 27, 366. He was the last Emperor to plausibly claim a connection to Constantine I the Great.
