PLAVTILLA AVGVSTA, draped bust right. Rev. VENVS VICTRIX, Venus standing left, holding apple and palm and leaning on shield, Cupid standing left at her feet, holding shield. The coin is toned light gray. Legends are full, and the portrait and reverse image are clear and show good detail. Plautilla was the daughter of the praetorian prefect, and she brought some of her father's great wealth to the marriage. Caracalla grew to hate her, and when her father fell from favor in 205, Septimius Severus banished her to Lipari, where Caracalla had her killed after his father's death. Venus (Aphrodite in Greek)was the goddess of love and Cupid (Eros to the Greeks), her son, represented love. However, on this coin they represent military strenght. Venus was the mother of Aeneus, the mythical ancestor of the Romans, and his mother protected him on his journey from fallen Troy to Italy.
