Description This piece was minted in 247 AD, at the outset of the reign of Philip II, who was the son of Philip I, who ruled from 244-249 AD. Philip II was made Caesar on his father's accession, and was elevated to Augustus in 247 AD. He reigned jointly with his father until 249 AD, when he was likely killed along with his father at the battle of Verona. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Philip II facing right, with legends IMP.M.IVL.PHILIPPVS.AVG. The reverse features Philip I and Philip II seated left on curule chairs, with legends LIBERALITAS.AVGG.III. This type was minted to mark the third donative of the reign of Philip I, which was held to mark the proclamation of Philip II as Augustus. Coin shows a little striking weakness, but otherwise grades AVF, with clear to bold devices and legends where struck up, and attractive green patina. A very pleasing example of this scarcer historical type, catalogued as RIC-267. All coins guaranteed genuine without restrictions. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. We're sorry, but we can no longer accept credit cards. All shipments to Italy will be made by Registered Mail only, and at the buyer's risk. Member ANA.
