The celebrations of the 1000th year after the founding of Rome
were on an unprecedented scale. Exotic animals were imported for
the circus and games.. The moose, a New World animal, rather
inexplicably appears on the reverse of this sestertius, which is
called a goat in RIC. Does this imply there was some ongoing
commerce with North America during this time?
