                          PHILIP I: A.D. 244 - 249

     A native of Arabia, Philip was appointed to the post of praetorian
   prefect by Gordian III. He soon brought about the murder of the young
  emperor, concluded a satisfactory peace with the Persians, and returned
 to Rome. The chief event of his reign was the celebration, in 248, of the
      thousandth anniversary of the foundation of Rome, and there were
                  magnificent games with many wild beasts.
