                                Description

     AR Tetradrachm of Philip I from the mint of Antioch, 246AD.
     Obv:AVTOK.K.M.IOV?.PHI?I??OV.CEB. His laureate & draped bust
     right. Rev: ?HMARX.E?OVCIAC.(Gamma) Eagle with laurel wreath in
     the beak left, SC beneath the spread wings, MON.VRB. beneath.
     9.93 grams. Similar to Sear GIC 3957.

     EF with superb veristic portrait in best Roman style and pleasing
     old collection tone.

     Philip instigated the assassination of Gordian III when he was
     Paetorian Prefect in 244. The most notable event of his reign was
     the celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of the founding of
     Rome in 247/48. He was later overthrown by his own general Trajan
     Decius in 249.
