Description ***Please be sure to check our website this weekend for lots of NEW ADDITIONSat historicalcoins.com*** [Image] Philip I the Arab. 244-249 AD. AR Antoninianus (3.93 gm). Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right / Four military standards. RIC IV 62; RSC 50. EF, lamination flaw before face. Scarce! 713750. Philip I was a Romanized Arab from a frontier town in the Arabian desert who, through hard-work and talent, rose to the powerful post of Praetorian Prefect during the reign of Gordian III. During the latter's campaign against the Parthians in 244 AD, Philip allegedly stirred up the soldiers against the boy Emperor and instigated his murder, assuming the purple in his place. Despite his nefarious means of gaining the throne, Philip proved a mild and capable Emperor. The biggest event of his five-year reign were the Millenial Games staged in 247 BC to mark Rome's 1,000th anniversary. Philip also campaigned effectively against the Carpi in Dacia, and treated the Senate with respect. His mildness toward the Christians led to the story that he was sympathetic toward the sect, or was even a closet Christian himself. Despite his tolerance and moderation, he was not widely liked or admired--the Italian blue-bloods looked down their noses at their Arabian provincial ruler, and his restraint was seen as weakness. Also, he could never quite live down the act of regicide that launched his reign. When he sent the Senator Trajan Decius off to crush a rebellion on the Danube frontier, the legions proclaimed Decius Emperor instead. Philip marched north to meet him, but was defeated and slain in battle. Authenticity unconditionally guaranteed - 14 day return privilege for any reason.
