Description This piece was minted during the reign of Philip I, who ruled from 244-249 AD. Philip was the praetorian prefect under Gordian III, and was responsible for the young emperor's murder in 244 AD, after which he was declared emperor by the army. His reign is noted for the conclusion of a satisfactory peace with the Persians, and for the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the founding of Rome in 248 AD. Philip and his son were killed at the battle of Verona while fighting the rebel armies of Trajan Decius. The obverse of this type depicts the radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right of Philip, with legends IMP.M.IVL.PHILIPPVS.AVG. The reverse features Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm, with legends VICTORIA.AVG. Coin shows a little striking weakness, but otherwise grades a super Near FDC, with bold devices and legends, only the lightest wear, and nearly full mint lustre. A lovely museum quality example of the type, catalouged as RSC-231. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN. For more ancients, please visit our WWW page at http://www.philly.infi.net/~mdgeary/ .
