The reign of Philip I saw the conclusion of peace with the Persians, and the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the founding of the city of Rome. He would reign jointly with his son Philip II from 247-249, and both would be killed in 249 while battling the rebel forces of Trajan Decius at Verona. The obverse of this type depicts the radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Philip I facing right, with legends IMP.M.IVL.PHILIPPVS.AVG. The reverse features Aequitas standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae, with legends AEQVITAS.AVGG. This piece grades a choice EF, with sharply detailed devices, clear legends, and attractive original colour with much original lustre beneath. A very choice example of the type, catalouged as RSC-9.
