See details Description Pescennius Niger was one of short-lived rulers of the Roman Empire. He was proclaimed Emperor in AD 193 after the death of Pertinax and the disgraceful elevation of Didius Julianus, the man who "bought" the position. Niger's base of operations was in Antioch, and because of his distance from Rome, was not able to consolidate his hold on power as quickly as Septimius Severus, who immediately marched on Rome. The two eventually squared off in battle, where Severus was victorious at the battle of Issus in the Spring of AD 194. All of Pescennius Niger's coinage is rare and was minted in Antioch, Syria. Pescennius Niger, AD 193-194. Silver Denarius, 2.76 grams, 19mm in diameter. Antioch mint. Obverse: Laureate bust of Pescennius Niger right. Reverse: Justitia standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae. Reference: RIC 47d (R4); Sear 6114. Grade: Very Fine. This coin is guaranteed authentic.
