VERY RARE!!! ----------------------------------------------------------------- Condition: Good VF, sharp details Obverse: IMP. CAES. C. PESC. NIGER IVST. AVG, Laureate head, right Reverse: INVICTO IMPERAT, trophy with arms below. References: RIC 34a Comments: Due to unknown reasons this coin was strike twice with the same dies. On the obverse two busts of the emperor can be seen clearly. Niger's administration was in a rush to increase his popularity throughout the empire by producing as many coins with his face as possible and that lead to a decrease in the control over the coin striking, which is the reason why this coin reached present days. This coin hasn't been in circulation but its weight is reduced, which is a sign of lack of silver in the treasury. A suggestion based on this fact might be made that this particular piece was struck in the last days before Pescennius Niger's execution. There are green spots on the coin, a result of being close to other denarii for centuries. Take advantage of the opportunity to own this unique piece, in great condition at a very reasonable price. Pescennius Niger A.D. 193 - 194 Of humble origin, C. Pescennius Niger was born sometime between A.D. 135 and 140 and had a long and honorable career in the army. In A.D. 190 he held the consulship and in the following year was appointed governorof Syria. After the murder of Pertinax, he was proclaimed emperor by his troops. Severus, however, having secured Rome, turned his attention to his rival in the East, and thrice defeated the forces of Niger. The latter concentrated the remains of his army to Issus to make a last stand, but he was again defeated and fled towards the Euphrates only to be overtaken and executed.
