Struck 193 A.D. at Rome. Nearly VF, and very rare! RIC IV 13a (Rarity-2), RCV 6048, RSC IV 56, (3.4 gm.). P. Helvius Pertinax was born the son of a freed slave, and like many Emperors who were to follow him, chose a military career to raise his standing in society. Marcus Aurelius rewarded him for his military victories by appointing him to the posts of Senator, then Consul, and finally, Governor. Although he did not fare as well under Commodus, Pertinax found his services needed in 185, when the troops in Britain became mutinous. Seven years later, at the age of 67, he was Prefect of Rome when Commodus was assassinated, and his position made him the logical choice to be proclaimed Augustus. Like Galba before him (who had to cut the budgetary excesses inherited from Nero, thus angering greedy soldiers), Pertinax ushered in a new era of disposable Emperors, and civil war, which began with his execution after only a three-month reign.
