From the Gemini IV Auction, Closed January 8, 2008. Lot # 488 - Auction is closed.Estimate: US$4000 / Price Realized: US$4500 Otacilia Severa, Philip I, and Philip II as Caesar. Bimetallic orichalcum and copper medallion on oversize flan, 44 mm Otacilia Severa, Philip I, and Philip II as Caesar. (). Bimetallic orichalcum and copper medallion on oversize flan, 44 mm (77.13 gm). Rome, 244-247 AD. MARCIA OTACIL SEVERA AVG, draped bust of Otacilia right, wearing stephane / PIETAS AVGVSTORVM, draped busts of Philip I, laureate, and Philip II, bare-headed, vis a vis, both busts seen from behind. Bachofen von Echt 2020, pl. 24 (same dies). Gnecchi 1 (5 specimens), pl. 110.2 (same obverse die). Cohen 1 (500 Fr.). Bimetallic flan, the central disk being red copper, while the outer ring is of yellow orichalcum. Extraordinarily broad and heavy at 44 mm and 77.13 gm; the von Echt specimen, by contrast, also bimetallic, is only 36 mm and 52.69 gm, which are about the normal dimensions of medallions of this period. Green and brown patina. Fine. This medallion comes in two varieties, not distinguished by Gnecchi: Philip II’s bust on the reverse may be seen from behind, as on the von Echt specimen and on ours, or it may be seen from the front, as on the Paris specimen illustrated by Gnecchi. Judging from the identical form and placement of the letters of the reverse legend, both variants may actually come from the same reverse die, the portraits merely having been re-engraved and enlarged to create the second stage of the die, shown by the Paris coin, and Philip II’s bust type having been changed. © 2005-2008 Gemini, LLC | Email: info@geminiauction.com Gemini Auctions' results, text and images are re-used by the kind permission of: Freeman & Sear (www.freemanandsear.com) and Harlan J Berk (www.harlanjberk.com)
