Numerian was one of two sons of Carus, and was made Caesar on his father's accession. He accompanied Carus on his campaign against the Persians, and was created Augustus during the course of that campaign. Following the death of Carus, Numerian slowly led the army back to Europe, but Numerian would be found murdered in his litter near Heraclea in Thrace. Arrius Aper, the praetorian prefect and father in law of the late emperor, was accused of the crime and executed by Diocletian, commander of the imperial bodyguard. Diocletian would subsequently assume the purple himself, and some authorities suspect that he was the one behind Numerian's death. The obverse of this piece depicts the laureate and draped bust of Numerian facing right, with Greek legends for A.K.M.AN.NOVMEIRIANOS.SEB. The reverse features Eirene (Pax) standing left, holding olive branch and transverse sceptre, with legend ETOVS.Gamma. This denotes that this piece was minted in year three of the reign of Carinus. Coin grades a Good VF, with bold devices and legends all around. A very nice example of the type, catalouged as Milne 4735. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitation. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders over $20. Member ANA, PAN.
