Nice Roman Fortuna AE As of NERVA $61.00 Mar-14-00 Seller praetorian This coin was minted during the short reign of Nerva, who ruled from 96-98 AD. Nerva was a distinguished lawyer who held the consulship with Vespasian in 70 AD and again with Domitian in 90. On the assassination of the latter, he was proclaimed emperor, and did much to improve the condition of the empire during his rule. However, he lacked the capacity to command, and had only the half-hearted support of the army. This led him to adopt Trajan as his heir, and this was perhaps his greatest gift to the empire. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate head of Nerva facing right, with legends IMP.NERVA.CAES.AVG.P.M.TR.P.COS.II.P.P. The reverse features Fortuna standing left, holding rudder and cornucopiae, with legend FORTVNA.AVGVST.SC.
