Nero Claudius Drusus, Æ sestertius, (25.90g) struck under his son Claudius,
TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG IMP TR P P P Laureate head right. / NERO CLAVDIVS
DR[V]SVS GERMAN IMP Arch, topped by equestrian statue of Nero Claudius
Drusus and trophies made up of captured German arms, S C at sides.
RIC(Claudius)114; Vagi 493. Choice EF, delicate dark green patina, with a
most expressive portrait, a bit weak on the upper reverse legend, several
striking cracks at edge, well-struck from very good style metropolitan
dies, well-centered, on an immense 38mm flan. This coin is better than the
Triton VI example, despite the flan splits. Untooled and original. Very
rare this nice!

Nero Claudius Drusus was the brother of Tiberius, and an important general.
He died from injuries sustained in a horse-riding accident. Considering his
elder brother Tiberius became emperor, this unfortunate man would have
played an important role in Roman politics almost half a century after his
accidental death. One might even suspect that he would have succeed
Tiberius in A.D. 37 to become the 3rd Caesar.
