   HD: Galba countermark on Rare Nero/Poppaea AE

     Nero, AE27, (10.75g) Nicaea, Bythinia, Radiate head right,
     rectangular countermark Poppaea as Securitas seated right.
     RPC2060a (1 known right facing, two left facing, same obverse die
     as RPC plate coin), countermark Howgego591. Coin and countermark
     F, porous dark tone.

     As the revolt against Nero spread, his coins were countermarked
     with the name of his enemy Galba. This coin takes Roman dupondius
     types and translates them into Provincial ones, with Greek
     legends. Note that Securitas becomes the empress. Perhaps all
     early Roman reverse types are meant as imperial family members
     with the attributes of gods and goddesses. Interesting, and the
     second known example.
