F OBV: Laureate head right, wearing aegis; REV: Nero on horseback right, hoding spear; behind him, soldier on horseback right, holding vexillum. RARE! RIC I 170; Cohen 83. Green patina. NERO--Nero Claudius Caesar Drusus Germanicus. Roman emperor 54-68 AD. Became emperor at the death of Claudius. Was a pupil of the philosopher Seneca whom he subsequently had commit suicide. The very first part of his reign was uneventful, but he learned his cruelties easily and soon became a terror to the noble families of rome. He poisoned Brittanicus, had Octavia murdered, poisoned his mother Agrippina who was instrumental, through her great capacity for evil, in placing him upon the throne. He was accused of setting the great fire at Rome. Needing scapegoats for his heinous crimes he persecuted the Christians.
