Description: We are very pleased to offer this genuine 1900+ year old Roman silver Denarius of the Emperor Nero for your consideration. This coin was minted in Rome in 66-67 AD and survives in choice very fine condition with both sides being well struck and still exhibiting a beautiful luster. Our photo does not convey the luster which is so apparent when viewing this coin in person. It features a highly artistic portrait of Nero and a mythological scene of Jupiter, the king of the gods. Of particular interest is the fact that this example is recorded in Roman Imperial Coinage as a very rare type and remains a testament to one of Rome's most infamous emperors. Nero began his reign with good intentions. He promised to govern "In the manner of Augustus," and expressed compassion and responsibility. For the first ten years he ruled with the advice and support of his two respected tutors, Burrus and the Stoic philosopher Seneca. Unfortunately for the Roman people, his good intentions did not last. He soon became more interested in his own self-seeking life of pleasure than in governing the most powerful empire in the world. Nero loved to put on extravagant games in the arena and was known to throw tokens into the crowds which could be exchanged for valuable art or prizes which ocassionally included houses and ships. His family life became an arena for his jealousy and fits of rage. He banished his mother Agrippina to a vile existence on an island only to later have her murdered. During an argument at one of their drunken parties, he kicked his pregnant wife Poppaea to death. Though large districts of Rome were regularly destroyed by fire, one of the most disastrous occurred in 68 AD. Since Nero made no secret of the fact that he believed he was a talented singer, the rumor started that he set the fires to provide inspiration for a new ballad he was writing about the burning of Troy. The legend which claims he played a fiddle while Rome burned is completely inaccurate since the fiddle had yet to be invented. Disillusioned with Nero's misrule, two of his most capable commanders, Vindex and Galba rose in rebellion and the Senate declared Nero a public enemy and condemned him to death by flogging with rods. Hearing this, Nero fled and sought sanctuary in the house of an ex-slave and begged someone take a dagger and put an end to his life because he lacked the nerve to do so himself. Finally, when he heard the approach of Roman troops coming to arrest him, he clumsily stabbed himself in the throat. As he slowly bled to death, he lamented, "What an artist the world is losing!" The history, artistry and mythological subjects of ancient Roman coins have always been a tremendous lure to collectors. In addition, these heirlooms of the ancient world have become extremely popular as showpieces for modern jewelry. Here's your opportunity to add this very desirable 1900+ year old example to your collection. We've decided to offer this historic coin with no reserve to stimulate active bidding and encourage new collectors. You will not be disappointed with this important and valuable ancient treasure.
