Domitus Ahenobarbus, Nero Claudius Caesar Drusus Germanicus changed his name after his adoption by the emperor Claudius in 50 A.D. Ascending to the throne in 54 A.D., his early reign was tempered by the influence, restraint and judicial rule of his advisors Seneca and Burrus. After the death of Burrus and retirement of Seneca in 62 A.D., Nero's behavior became increasingly more extravagant and licentious, with the emperor taking part in stage plays, musical events, extended drinking bouts and sexual adventures. His singing and acting (for starters) was not well received by the populace, however, who not only considered Nero of mediocre stage talent but also felt him to be engaging in behavior unseemly for an emperor. With the Great Fire of 64, things became even worse as Nero ridiculously laid the blame for it upon Rome's small Christian community. (Many felt he had started the blaze himself to clear the land on which he had begun his "Golden House", a massive and expensive project that would compound Rome's fiscal crisis of the period.) To add even more to this wacky mix, Nero went on a "grand tour" of Greece in 67, where he competed in Pythian, Olympic and Nemean Games, not surprisingly winning over better athletes. Within a few months after his return to Rome in late 67, a revolt broke out in Gaul that eventually spread to Spain and North Africa. Before long, Nero's support had faded in Rome and he fled to his villa outside Rome in June of 68. He died on June 9, 68 in a suicide/murder with his last words being something to the effect of "What an artist the world is losing". Mint of Rome. Nice Fine. R.I.C. I, 59. Interesting gold coin from one of the more infamous of Roman emperors. Reverse depicts Salus seated left, holding patera. NO RESERVE!!!
