Struck 67-68 A.D. RSC 119, RIC 45, BMC 74. This type was struck to mark Nero's escape from the Pisonian Conspiracy, named for a nobleman named Piso. The would-be assassin took a sacred dagger from the Temple of Salus in Ferentum, but was betrayed, with the dagger presented as evidence to Nero. He inscribed it, and dedicated it to Jupiter, the Protector. Dozens of Rome's elite were accused, including Senators, and several women. Most were executed or banished, and a few committed suicide. Among those who lost their lives were Piso, the Praetorian Prefect Fufus, and the illustrious Seneca.
