Description This is a really superb Sestertius of Maximus (Caesar 235-238 under Maximinus Thrax). The Obverse: "MAXIMVS CAES GERM" presumably shows that he participated in his father's conguest of Germany. (At least he wanted us to believe he did.) His father was a huge brutish man who soundly defeated the Alamanni in the swamps of northern Baden, then had a painting of his victory sent to the Roman senate! It was on this occasion that he made his son Caesar, and began issuing coins for him. This coin, RIC 11, was issued from early in 236 to about April of 238. It is a typical "Caesar" type, showing sacrificial implements on the reverse, with the legend: "PIETAS AVG SC" linking him somehow to the piety of his father...(!?) It is not called Scarce in RIC, and it does turn up, but any coin of Maximus is hard to find these days, and this one is a beauty! It grades at least nearly Very Fine overall, and would be higher were it not for weakness in the center area of the reverse, and some funny marks on the obverse. (See photo) Otherwise the portrait is about EF! ...Special Note to bidders: This lot is part of a very large collection of Roman Copper and bronze coins we have just aquired. This collection is full of rare and interesting types in collectable grades. Note that inscriptions given in parentheses "( )" are not legible on the coin but are known from other coins. "RIC" refers to: "Roman Imperial Coins". Be sure to note our other offerings. They are coded "CC" (for Coast to Coast) in the title. ....And be sure to check out our web site at: www.coastcoin.com ....Terms of Sale: We accept payment by check, money order, or Visa, Mastercard or Discover card.
