Given the title of Caesar at the time of his father's accession, Maximus would share his father's fate three years later, when he was murdered with him near Aquileia. The obverse of this type depicts the bare headed and draped bust of Maximus facing right, with legends C.IVL.VERVS.MAXIMVS.CAES. The reverse features sacrificial implements, a knife, patera, jug, simpulum, and sprinkler, with legends PIETAS.AVG.SC. This reverse type has been used on coinage of the Caesars since the time of Julius Caesar. This piece grades a nice VF, with bold devices and legends all around, attractive surfaces, and a nice portrait of Maximus! A very pleasing example of the type, catalouged as RIC-6.
