The coin does seem to be "unlisted in RIC'. I don't know if it is unknown, unpublished or other wise. I looked at several other online databases (i.e. Wildwinds, VCRC, Perseus) and can't find it there either. There is one place that it does fit into in RIC. First let me note that, "gamma" is definitely a Maximinus officina. In the period 311-312 there is a record of the following three coins with the same obverse design, having MKV In Ex. Mars advancing right in military dress, right hand holding a transverse spear, left a shield and trophy over shoulder. The three coins are: 1) RIC #93a - VIRTUS E_XERCITVS (or _X_); IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMINVS P F AVG 2) RIC #93b -Same as above; IMP C FL VAL CONSTANTINVS P F AVG 3) RIC #94 - VIRTUTI E_XCERTVS; VAL LICINNIANVS LICINNIVS P F AVG Could this one fit in here? Depending on who you read, Maximinus II Daia became an Augustus some time from 309 to mid 310. RIC puts it at May 310, Van Meter in 309, Vagi in 310. He was also caught up in the controversy with Constantine as to who was an Augustus, and they both had the title of Filius Augustorum in some parts of the empire in 308 to 310 (309?). Another fit seems to be the follis of 308-309. VIRTUTI E_X_ERCITVS (which does match the break on your coin), Mars advancing right in military dress, right hand holding spear, left a shield and trophy over shoulder. However, this one would require that Maximinus became an Augustus in 309. There are a number of possibilities here, none of which I can speak to with any first hand knowledge. Since Cyzicus did not use the Filius Augustorum in this period did a celator jump the gun? Did Maximinus II actually become an Augustus in 309, as noted in Van Meter? Was an earlier reverse die used with a later obverse die? Of course I could simply just be missing something very obvious here. Personally, I believe that the coin's best fit is the later 311-312 series. Carl Zipfel 14 Dec 2000
