Description EXCELLENT MAXIMINUS II FOLLIS [Image] Maximinus II as Caesar, 305-308AD; Follis Obv: GAL VAL MAXIMINVS NOB CAES, Laureate bust of Maximinus right Rev: GENIO CAESARIS, Genius standing left holding patera and cornucopiae, MKGamma in exergue Maximinus was the nephew of Galerius, a fact which assisted his rise through the ranks, and was raised to the rank of Caesar upon the abdication of Diocletian and Maximianus in 305. Following the death of Severus II, Maximinus believed he was to be promoted to Augustus by Galerius, but instead it was Licinius I who was so elevated. This angered him and, in placation, he and Constantine were given the newly created, yet hollow, titles of Filii Augustorum' ('sons of the Augusti') by Galerius. This ploy was to fail and Maximinus was declared Emperor by his own troops in 310. His rule was oppressive and severe, and in 313 his ongoing quarrel with Licinius came to a decisive head with a battle at Campus Serenus (Tzirallum) in Thrace. Maximinus fled east, disguised as a slave but was to perish at Tarsus soon after. RIC Cyzicus 34 [R] (Struck 25 July 306-December 308), cf.
