Auction currency is U.S. dollars ($) unless otherwise noted. Description ROMAN EGYPT. Reign of MAXIMINUS DAZA (MAXIMINUS II) A.D. 308-13. Mint: ALEXANDRIA. Struck A.D. 312. Bronze. 17 mm. *** Obv. Bust right of SERAPIS, modius atop head. Inscription: DEO SANCTO SERAPIDI. *** Rev. NILUS reclining, leaning on a crocodile (or hippoptomus ?), holding a reed in his right hand and a cornucopia in his left arm. Inscription: DEO SANCTO NILO, ALE in exergue, B in field (Officina B). *** Van Heesch # 6b (10 specimens known). *** Dark patina with earthen highlights. Very Fine and pleasing.(Scan is 4x actual size). VERY RARE. *** In THE LAST CIVIC COINAGES AND THE RELIGIOUS POLICY OF MAXIMINUS DAZA(1993) Van Heesch proves that these coins and related coins from Antioch and Nicomedia were struck between the end of A.D. 311 and the end of A.D. 312. The Christian populations of these cities had been expelled by order of MAXIMINUS in A.D. 311. The Pagan officials struck these coins as an expression of love for their Gods and an act of anti-Christian propaganda. MAXIMINUS reversed the edicts against the Christians in A.D. 313 and their priviledges were restored. He may have feared provoking Constantine I and LIcinius I with his persecutions of the Christians. *** Reasonble starting bid and never a hidden reserve in my auctions. New to selling on ebay. 30 years dealing in ancient coins. AUTHENTICITY UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEED. 14 day return priviledge for any reason. Shipping in the U.S. is $3.50 for Priority Mail.
