No.248. Cilicia, Ninica-Claudiopolis. Maximinus I. Æ 27. A.D. 235-238. Obv: IMP C S IVL VER MAXIMINVS. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Six countermarks: (1) dot within triangle within circle (to right, before bust); (2) six-pointed incuse star (on lower part of bust); (3) eagle right, head turned left, in shaped punch (on neck); (4) Nike standing right in oval punch (behind and on back of head); (5) same (on upper part of head); (6) same (before head). Rev: NINI COL CLAUDI, OPOLI in ex. Tetrastyle temple containing emperor, standing left, holding patera and spear. Ref: BMC 10; Sear 3548 (same dies); Howgego 669, 451, 338, 262 (3 applications). Grade: about Fine, dark brown patina with lighter devices. Countermarks VG-VF. Die Axis: 360°. Weight: 9.12 g. According to Howgego, the sequence of application of countermarks appears to have been (1) D in circle (669), (2) six-pointed star (451), (3) Nike (262), and (4) eagle (338).
