Maximinus was of Thracian peasant stock, and was a man of great stature and physical strength. He was in charge of recruits on the Rhine when the army, having grown dissatisfied with the unwarlike character of Severus Alexander, declared him emperor and murdered Alexander and his mother. He campaigned against the Germans with considerable success, but his reign was characterized by his hatred of the nobility and ruthless cruelty toward anyone suspected of conspiring against him. This led to the abortive rebellion of the Gordianii, which he promptly suppressed. He was not so fortunate in dealing with the joint emperors Balbinus and Pupienus, as Maximinus and his son were murdered by their own troops in the midst of their advance on Rome. The obverse of this type depicts the radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Maximinus facing right, with legends IMP.MAXIMINVS.PIVS.AVG. The reverse type features Pax standing left, holding branch and transverse sceptre, with legends PAX.AVGVSTI.SC. Coin shows some very light surface granularity, but otherwise grades AVF, with clear to bold devices and most legends visible. A nice example of the type, catalouged as RIC-59. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. Visa/MC accepted for orders of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN. Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Image] Bidding Bidding is closed for this item.
