Description This piece was minted during the short reign of Maximinus I, who ruled from 235-238 AD. Maximinus was of Thracian peasant stock, and was a man of great stature and physical strength. He was in charge of recruits on the Rhine when the army, having grown dissatisfied with the unwarlike character of Severus Alexander, declared him emperor and murdered Alexander and his mother. He campaigned against the Germans with considerable success, but his reign was characterized by his hatred of the nobility and ruthless cruelty toward anyone suspected of conspiring against him. This led to the abortive rebellion of the Gordianii, which he promptly suppressed. He was not so fortunate in dealing with the joint emperors Balbinus and Pupienus, as Maximinus and his son were murdered by their own troops in the midst of their advance on Rome. The obverse of this piece depicts the laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Maximinus facing right, with legends IMP.MAXIMINVS.PIVS.AVG. The reverse features Salus seated left, feeding out of patera a snake rising from altar, and resting left arm on chair. The legends read SALVS.AVGVSTI.
