Description Coin Central [Image] SUPERB Maximinus I "Thrax" Denarius (Sear 2339) FDC! Click HERE for bigger image OBVERSE: Maximinus, facing right. IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG REVERSE: Pax, standing left, holding olive branch. PAX AVGVSTI (Peace of the Emperors) NOTES: Ultra high grade coin for the high-end collector! I wish I had a digital camera to capture its "mint state" quality, front and back. Well centered, artistically satisfying portrait, all legends on flan and crisp. No hint of wear! I paid $135; suggested retail was $150. HISTORY: As a general under Severus Alexander, Maximinus came to power in 235, after his soldiers murdered Alexander and his mother, Julia Mamaea. He was huge, with some accounts claiming he was eight feet tall. Maximinus raised taxes enormously to give his soldiers huge pay raises and spent most of his time in the field campaigning. He was not well liked, except by the soldiers. Finally, in 238, rebellion broke out in Africa Proconsularis (modern Tunisia). A mob killed the head tax collector and prevailed upon the elderly Gordian I to accept the Imperial Purple. The Senate in Rome liked the idea, and quickly declared Maximinus an outlaw, proclaiming Gordian I and his son Gordian II the new emperors. But supporters of Maximinus invaded Africa Proconsularis. Gordian II was killed in the fighting, and Gordian I committed suicide. Back in Rome, the Senate was in a quandary. With Maximinus marching on Rome, they knew they must act quickly. They elected two of their own, Pupienus and Balbinus, as new Emperors. Pupienus contacted spies in Maximinus's camp, who charged his tent in the middle of the night and stabbed him to death. But Pupienus and Balbinus would not survive him for long. Later that year, they were murdered by their own guards, making the year 238 the single bloodiest year for Roman emperors, with five emperors dying violently in a single year. If you're the seller or the high bidder - now what? 1. Contact each other. The seller (coincentral) and the high bidder (jeffhermann@juno.com) should contact each other within three business days to discuss payment and shipping details. 2. Leave feedback for the other party once the the seller has received the payment and the winning bidder has received the item. Leave feedback to seller - Leave feedback to bidder. Details for the seller and high bidder(s): The seller should contact the winning bidder(s) with information on the total cost, including shipping, and where to send payment. The winning bidder(s) must pay the seller directly for the item(s), and it is the seller's responsibility to fulfill the order when payment terms are met. The binding contract of the auction is between the winning bidder and the seller. If the seller is unable to establish contact with the high bidder within 3 business days, the seller may contact the next highest bidder. Therefore, if the high bidder does not contact the seller within 3 business days of the end of the auction, he/she may lose the place as winning bidder, and be at risk for receiving negative feedback and/or a Non-Paying Bidder warning, both of which can ultimately lead to suspension from eBay. --------------------------------------------------------------- Announcements | Register | eBay Store | SafeHarbor | Feedback Forum | About eBay Copyright © 1995-1999 eBay Inc.
