Radiate bust right and cuirassed Rev: IOVI CONSERVATORI AVGG ex (branch)XXI with TR just above. Cohen-371 TRIPOLIS now Tripoli, Lebanon was founded as a joint venture by the cities of Tyre (Es-Sur, Lebanon), Sidon (Saida, Lebanon), and Aradus (Ruad, Syria) sometime in the late fifth century. The colonists from each of the three founding cities each settled in a separate section, from which the name which literally means "three cities" in Greek, was derived. The city is situated on the Mediterranean Sea at the end of a peninsula, and was renowned in ancient times for the fine wine it produced. It served as an Imperial mint from the time of Aurelian (270-275) until just before the coinage reform of Diocletian in 294. Not very long and with only two officinae. Here's ol' MAXIMIANVS HERCULEVS nicely silvered and with a decent portrait. Above the exergue are the letters TR and back when I got this coin I thought... Hmm, Trier mint, because everybody knows TR is for Trier-WRONG. When the Tripolis closed in 294, Trier opened and used the same initials. The exergue is (tree branch) XXI. This configuration of the mint mark isn't listed but branch right and double branches are. Could well be a typo. Thanks for looking opening bid is $4.00. Personal Check, Money order or cashiers check please. 1.00 uninsured and 2.50 insured USA only. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Image] [Image] [counter 1] Free Honesty Counters powered by Andale!
