Description ***Please be sure to check our website for RECENT ADDITIONS at historicalcoins.com*** [Image] Maximianus. 286-305 AD. Antoninianus (3.76 gm). London mint, issued by Carausius. IMP C MAXIMIANVS P F AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right / PAX AVG (!), Pax standing left; S-P/MLXXI. RIC V pt.2, 34 var. (PAX AVGGG). VF, dark green patina. Extremely rare, apparently unrecorded with only one G! Unlike usurpers of the past, Carausius recognized the legitimacy of the other two emperors Diocletian and Maximianus, a favor that was not returned. This recognition takes several forms, the striking of coins in the name of Diocletian and Maximianus, issues showing Carausius and his "two brothers," and the normal use of the abreviation AVGGG on coins of the two "Continental" rulers, meaning three Augusti, or Emperors. The recorded forms of this coin all use the AVGGG reverse legend; however, this coin does not, indicating it may be a "mule" of a Maximianus obverse and a reverse intended for use on coins of Carausius himself (RIC V, pt. 2, page 471, 98ff). Authenticity unconditionally guaranteed - 14 day return privilege for any reason. CNG accepts for payment: check, money order or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express). The manner of payment accepted is subject to our qualification of the bidder. CNG's Domestic, Canadian, and International postage rates. Pennsylvania residents please add appropriate sales tax.
