Though wed to one of co-Emperor Galerius' daughters, and given the rank of Senator, his ambition lay far beyond that. In 306, after the death of Constantius I, Galerius elevated Severus II to Augustus, and replaced him as Caesar with Constantine. Passed over, Maxentius led a coup in his favor in Rome, and to gain more support (since he had few troops) urged his father out of retirement to rule with him. The legitimate Augusti were not able to dislodge him at first with troops, but in 312, a battle on the Tiber resulted in the drowning of many of his soldiers, along with Maxentius himself.
