Description XP - Rarely Seen Maxentius Half Follis - Ostia Mint [Image] Click here for a larger size image of this lot * Maxentius, 306-312 AD, as Co-Augustus - AE Half Follis, 2.60g. * Obv: MAXENTI-VS P F AVG; Helmeted, cuirassed, left facing bust of Maxentius holding transverse spear over right shoulder, shield on left arm. * Rev: VICTORIA A-ETERNAE AVG N; Victory standing right, left foot on base of cippus supporting shield which she inscribes VOT / XX / FEL in three lines; to left, captive seated left; in exergue, MOSTS. * RIC VI Ostia #63 (Scarce), Cohen #123 (5 Fr), Sear # 3784v, Van Meter #24v. * This scarce coin is a variant of the more common Vot / X type and was struck c. 310-312 AD. The relatively light weight (typical weight was 3.25-2.75 g.) would tend to put this near the end of the dating period. The reverse three line inscription on the shield, though difficult to make out, is straightforward to figure based on the comparison with the the RIC plate coin for #64 (which has the same reverse).Tough to find in any grade, this coin has a very nice dark, contrasting patina. A slight flan crack at the 3 o'clock position does not detract from the detail of the coin or disturb it's integrity. Despite the even wear, this coin is a must for the serious Constantinian era collection. This is a No Reserve auction. Money Order, Check or PayPal are acceptable for payment. I charge $2 for shipping. Foreign shipments will be made only by Global Priority for a fee of $5. Registered foreign shipment - $8, unless you discuss other arrangements with me first.
