Description M. Aurelius Scarce As - gVF Marcus Aurelius, AD 161-180. A scarce bronze As, issued while Caesar under Antoninus Pius, attributed as RIC (AP) 1331. Obv: Bare head, draped bust right with legend AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII FIL. Rev: Minerva seated right right with right hand held up to her head and holding a spear in her left hand. Legend is TR POT X COS II SC. MARCVS AELIVS AVRELIVS VERVS, born Marcus Annius Verus in 121 at Rome to Domitia Lucilla and Annius Verus, had his name changed when he was adopted by his uncle Antoninus Pius in 138. He married Faustina Jr. in 145, and became Augustus after Pius died on March 7, 161. He then made Lucius Verus his co-ruler. Aurelius' reign was one of constant warfare, most of which he personally directed after 167 (Verus died in 169). He had nearly achieved total victory along the Danube when he died at Vienna on March 17, 180 after a brief illness. He was deified and buried in Hadrian's Tomb. This coin has one of those green patinas with earthen tones [Image] scattered throughout which make it difficult to photograph properly. It's on a smallish uneven flan which does affect the legends somewhat. The bust and the reverse are simply beautiful with detail approaching EF, especially the reverse although the only real wear on the obverse is on the hair curls just above the ear. ------------------------------------------------------------- Terms Payment to be made by cash, cashier's check, money order or personal check payable in U.S. funds.
