Description Coin was minted between 153 and 154 AD, in the name of Aurelius Caesar, who served under Antoninus Pius from 138-161 AD. He later ruled from 161-180. The reign of Aurelius was troubled by many frontier wars, and by a devestating plague that was brought back by soldiers returning from the Parthian war. He is perhaps best known for his Stoic philosophy, and as the author of "The Meditations", which Aurelius wrote while campaigning against the Germans. The obverse of this type depicts the bare head of Aurelius facing right, with legends AVRELIVS.CAESAR.AVG.PII.FIL. The reverse features Genius Exercitus in military dress standing left, sacrificing out of patera over lighted altar and holding legionary eagle. The legends read TR.POT.VIII.COS.II. Coin is struck on a smallish flan, but otherwise grades a nice VF, with bold devices and clear legends where struck up, and a very attractive portrait of Aurelius. A pleasing example of the type, catalouged as RSC-673. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. Visa/MC accepted for purchases of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN. For more ancients, please visit our WWW site at http://www.philly.infi.net/~mdgeary/ .
