Magnus Clemens Maximus served in the army in Britain under Gratian, and was proclaimed Augustus by his troops, who were unhappy with Gratian's rule. Maximus invaded Gaul, and the troops there deserted Gratian, who was killed enroute to Italy. Maximus controlled the Western Empire for four years, but wanted to rule Italy as well, and this led to his execution when he was defeated by the joint armies of Theodosius I and Valentinian II.
