IMP CAES M OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG, laureate, cuirassed bust right, seen from front, with long beard / PONTIF MAX TR P COS P P S C, Fides standing left, head right, holding two standards. BMCRE 121, pl. 82, 9 (same obverse die). Cohen 61. RIC 141. Lovely green patina with strong portrait. Flan crack at 7:00 on obverse. Extremely fine This obverse die originally showed Macrinus with a short beard (BMCRE pl. 81, 10). The beard was lengthened on the die at a later date, obviously reflecting the fact that Macrinus let his beard grow after becoming emperor (see C. Clay, "Coinage of Macrinus," NZ 93, 1979, pp. 29-32 with pl. 4, 1 and 5). The S C on the reverse is in the exergue of the present specimen, not in the field as on the BM example.
