Obverse: Laureate, cuirassed bust with short-cropped beard right. Legend is IMP CM OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG. Reverse: Fides between four standards. Legend is FIDES MILITVM. History: MARCVS OPELIVS MACRINVS was born in 164 to a poor family in Caesarea, Mauretania (now Cherchel, Algeria). He became an administrator of Septimius Severus. Caracalla named him Praetorian Praefect and took him on the Parthian campaign in 214. The campaign floundered and a paranoid Caracalla began to execute many of his own officials. Macrinus plotted to kill Caracalla (April 8, 217) and was proclaimed Augustus on April 11. He signed a shameful truce with the Parthians, and Army support soon swung to a rumored son of Caracalla, Bassianus, and Macrinus was killed at Antioch in June, 218. Condition: The coin is in choice EF/VF condition. The reverse was struck with worn dies, but the portrait is fabulous. ------------------------------------------------------------- Terms Payment to be made by cash, cashier's check, money order or personal check payable in U.S. funds.
