In his fifth year of service, Marcus learned that he had been denounced to Caracalla. Rather than wait for Caracalla to dispose of him, Marcus engaged a conspirator to murder Caracalla secretly. Even though he was a soldier, not a Senator, the Senate embraced him for delivering them from Caracalla. And by deifying Caracalla, who was popular with the troops, Macrinus gained their support, at first. But within a year, he lost that support, because of military pay cuts, and especially because he chose to make peace with Rome's enemies by giving them Roman territory without a fight. For these mistakes, he was arrested and executed.
