Macrinus was the commander of the Praetorian Guards under Caracalla, and was a party to the latter's murder. After his accession, a peace was patched up with the Parthians, but the terms were so unfavorable to the Romans that Macrinus lost much of his popularity. A conspiracy was fostered by Julia Maesa, the sister of Julia Domna, in favor of her son Bassianus (Elagabalus) caused the Syrian army to break into open revolt. In the ensuing struggle, Macrinus was defeated, betrayed, captured, and put to death after a reign of only fourteen months. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate and cuirassed bust of Macrinus facing right, with legends IMP.C.M.OPEL.SEV.MACRINVS.AVG. The reverse features Felicitas standing front, head left, holding long caduceus and cornucopiae, with legends PONTIF.MAX.TR.P.COS.P.P. Coin is a little off center, but otherwise grades Good VF+, with bold devices and legends all around, and a nice high relief Rome mint portrait of Macrinus. A choice example of the very scarce coinage of this short-lived emperor, this piece is catalouged as RSC-65. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. Visa/MC accepted for orders of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN.
