            MACRIANUS, 217-218 AD, AE24,Phoenicea,Berytos, EF.

              OBV: Laureate draped and cuirassed bust right;

       REV: Six-column Temple, containing standing figure of Astarte,
                             crowned by Nike.

      RARE! BMC 26.76, 165. Excellent dark brown patina, high relief,
                            artistic portrait.

       MACRIANUS I--Marcus Fulvius Macrianus (260-261.) It was due to
       his incompetence that the Roman army of Valerian was defeated,
      resulting in the capture of the emperor. Nevertheless, Macrianus
      was declared emperor by his troops. On his way back to Italy he
      was met in battle by one of Valerian's generals and was defeated
                                and slain.
