Following the capture of Valerian I by the Persians, the remnants of the Roman army were rallied by T. Fulvius Macrianus, one of Valerian's generals, and Ballista, the praetorian prefect. It was also decided that the two sons of Macrianus Senior, Fulvius Junius Macrianus and Fulvius Junius Quietus, would be proclaimed emperors, and that vigorous action should be taken to halt the advance of the Persians. Ballista achieved a notable victory over Sapor at Corycus, and the latter was obliged to retreat to the Euphrates. This success increased the confidence of the new rulers, and Macrianus and his father soon set out for Europe to challenge Gallienus. They only got as far as Illyricum, however, before they were met by Aureolus, one of Gallienus' generals. In the ensuing battle, the forces of Macrianus would be utterly defeated, and the emperor and his father were both slain. The obverse of this type depicts the radiate and cuirassed bust of Macrianus facing right, with legends IMP.C.FVL.MACRIANVS.P.F.AVG. The reverse type features Roma seated left, holding Victory and long sceptre, with legends ROMAE.AETERNAE. Coin shows surface granularity, and was struck with a worn reverse die, but otherwise grades AVF, with clear devices and most legends visible. A nice example of the rare coinage of Macrianus, catalouged as RSC-11a. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. Visa/MC now accepted for purchases over $20. Member ANA, PAN.
